Version 2.1

Posted in Dashboard at 5:19 pm by Kamal

Another day, another widget version. This one incorporates all fixes from before, plus one more. There is also one added feature: the space bar can be used to pause and start the animation. Not really much in the way of features, but I wanted to make a complete new version these fixes. Here is the list of all changes:

  • Space bar stops and starts animation
  • Update on activation now starts the animation
  • Selecting NOAA when all maps chosen do not exist at that source no longer freezes the widget
  • Not having “Regional Radar” selected prevents you from entering a ZIP code as it used to
  • Map display updates even when animation is stopped
  • Moving to preferences and back does not change map position
  • Refreshing maps does not make alerts disappear
  • Alerts actually disappear when they end

As usual, I update the latest release to fix small problems people are having. No reason to have to wait around for another release! Here I will keep a list of fixes. This list is current as of 4:15PM EST on 29 November 2005.

2.0 Final out the door!

Posted in Dashboard at 3:58 pm by Kamal

Radar in Motion 2.0 final is now complete. I have made several fixes and enhancements based on feedback from users. Thank you to all who send comments and suggestions! One of the biggest changes is that the widget now remembers a single map without it being added to the favorites. What this means is that if you used version 1.4 and didn’t like having to use the “+” when you only viewed a single map, you no longer need to do that. So for single-map viewing, 2.0 acts just like 1.4. Here is a full list of changes:

  • Removed up and down arrows to move between maps in favor of map counter button, click on it to switch to next map (or use up and down arrow keys)
  • If no favorites exist, single map displayed is remembered when the widget is restarted
  • Added option to rotate to next map at end of animation sequence
  • Removes all preferences when widget instance is removed
  • Several speed and memory optimizations
  • Information on last map not added to favorites remembered when flipping to back of widget
  • Fix: Severe weather alerts would not disappear after they were over
  • Fix: The widget could rotate maps (and therefore use CPU cycles) even when Dashboard was hidden
  • Fix: More detailed maps (300-mile and 100-mile) would not appear despite their being available
  • Fix: When set to save maps, switching the detail level would just add maps to current rotation and not retrieve all maps at new detail level
  • Fix: If using city, state combination, weather.com URL for weather required additional click in browser

As usual, if you have any problems or comments, please leave them here or email me. Enjoy!

Ongoing Fixes in 2.0b

Posted in Dashboard at 3:00 pm by Kamal

As people discover issues in version 2.0b, I fix them and quietly upload a new version of the widget. I don’t take the time to release a completely new version, as there would be a number of releases with very little changed. All of these changes will of course make it into the next version of the program. I hate leaving bugs in the program when I have been made aware of them, though.

This means that any issue you are having may already have been addressed and fixed in a new version that has already been uploaded. In this post, I will list the changes that have been made as a result of people’s bug finding. I will update it with new elements whenever I upload a new version so you know if the issue you are having has already been addressed and you can just download a new version. Once I have fixed what I believe to be all the bugs and also add or enhance a few features from suggestions I have received, I will release a 2.0 final version.

Here are the issues that have been taken care of as of 3:00pm EST on 17 November 2005:

  • Severe weather alerts would not disappear after they were over.
  • The widget might rotate maps (and therefore use CPU cycles) even when Dashboard was hidden
  • More detailed maps (300-mile and 100-mile) would not appear despite their being available.
  • When set to save maps, switching the detail level would just add maps to current rotation and not retrieve all maps at new detail level.

Please continue to let me know via comments or email about other issues you are having.

Version 2.0!

Posted in Dashboard at 11:25 am by Kamal

Radar in Motion 2.0 is ready. Right now, a beta version is available. Please send any probably you are having to me. I don’t want to make this a final release until it has been tested by other people. I have tested it myself and have fixed the problems I have discovered. I believe version 2.0 is pretty stable at this point. The new features in 2.0 are:

  • The ability to remember several maps and rotate through them. First, select a map on the preferences side. If you want to keep the map, click on the little “+” in the lower right-hand corner. This map is now stored. If you go to the preferences and choose another map and do the same, it will store that map, too. Use the up and down buttons (or up and down arrow keys) to circulate thorugh the different maps. You can also have the widget rotate the maps for you.
  • NOAA Support. This is the second most requested feature behind the ability to remember several maps. You can now choose your source, Weather.com or NOAA. If you have several maps saved and then switch sources, the maps will be retrieved from the new source. Note, however, that NOAA does not support all of the maps found in Weather.com. In the event you use Weather.com and have map remembered that is not present at NOAA, the widget will remember the map nonetheless and display it if you ever switch back to Weather.com. Select the source under the Updating section of prefernces. Note, I will not be making the widget able to select the source on a per-map basis.
  • All new preferences, divided into categories
  • Complete information on options in preferences
  • More map not loading fixes
  • Fixed retrieval of weather alerts
  • Keyboard shortcuts for moving through animation (left and right to move within a map, up and down to switch maps)
  • Double-click to maximize (double map size)

Please let me know if you experience any problems!

Donation

Posted in Website at 11:23 am by Kamal

A few people have said that if a donation option were given, they would donate. You can now do so through PayPal using the link at the right. Note that no donation is required and the widget itself has no mention of donating. It doesn’t nag you asking you to donate, it doesn’t even link to the donation page. And it never will. I believe in keeping the widget free from such things. However, if you do find that Radar in Motion has been helpful and you would like to donate a little money, it would be much appreciated!

New Version, New Website

Posted in Dashboard, Website at 11:21 am by Kamal

I have created a new website for Radar in Motion in order to make it easier for me to update and provide information. The new website will have links to the latest version of Radar in Motion, as well as all previous versions. You can also put comments on the website. This is a good place to post problems you are having. I will get email about them automatically and others can see issues that are coming up and have been addressed. As with the widget, please let me know if this website can be changed to serve you better!
